Devils' territory

The story of Devils Lane sounds like it good be a good one. It doesn't sound like the sort of name that the local community chose for its lucky-charm value...!

On a rainy day, this lonely country lane (in Longsdon, just outside Leek) makes for a sobering walk.

  1. I remember that a lot of place names and roads have some 'local' history or myth about them...this would be interesting to research.

    1. Hmm... well, according to oxfordscholarship.com, the early settlers in America would call a piece of disputed land a 'devil's lane' - but that's all I have so far.

  2. I love these old names. My favourite locally is Tom Cat Lane in Wetherby.
