This carved face seems to me to be trapped in the very stone from which it emerges. The closed eyes and the strands of now dried-up vegetation make the image even the more intriguing.
Fradswell Church, which is where this memorial is sited, is a strange one, being very isolated and quite remote from the village itself.

very nice - it seems each face is different.
ReplyDeleteThe Green man of old ? Or is it woman ? Very strange indeed...
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by... much appreciated...
Wonderful picture. I love the colouring of the algae on the stone. There's something about stone faces, I am always drawn to them.

So very haunting! Almost a touch of pagan spirit in this one! Love to know more about it!
ReplyDeleteYes, the green of the moss/lichen/algae, plus the closed eyes, plus the very shape of the face give the appearance of a death mask under water. As though an adult was born dead abd is rising through ... something. And, as Sanna points out, each of the faces appear individual the one of the left softened by curls. I wonder what caused the ivy to die? Fradswell Church appears to be very very old ... Thank you for this Mark. Most appreciated.
ReplyDeleteYes, your thought about a 'death mask' strikes a chord with me too, now I look at it again...
DeleteSomething from a Hammer Horror? I'm expecting the eyes to open and a voice to come at me! Great shot.
